THIS PROJECT WAS ABOUT CROSSING MY ILLUSTRATIONS WITH ANIMATION. EXPERIMENTING DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES THAT I HADN'T TRIED BEFORE. I INTENDED TO CREATE A FINISHED ANIMATION OF THIS PIECE AS WELL AS A PRINTABLE VERSION.
THE COLOR PALETTE FOR THIS PIECE HAD TO BE PLAYFUL AND FUN. I REFERENCED A LOT OF CHILDREN'S BOOKS ILLUSTRATIONS. MY MAIN IDEA WAS TO PUSH A COMPLIMENTARY SCHEME BETWEEN ORANGE AND BLUE.
STARTING OFF WITH SKETCHES OF A JACK IN THE BOX, I BUILT ON IT AND KEPT ADDING OBJECTS UNDER IT TO CREATE A LONG AND TALL COMPOSITION. I WAS LOOKING TO HAVE A LONG PAN SHOT FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. THE CONTENT WAS MEANT TO CREATE A SURREAL WORLD.
COMING FROM A GRAFFITI BACKGROUND, LINE IS SO IMPORTANT TO ME WHEN IT COMES TO ILLUSTRATIONS. THIS PUSHED ME TO CREATE A BLACK AND WHITE VERSION SHOWCASING LINE WEIGHTS ASIDE FROM THE FULL COLOR VERSION.
In 2015 there was a local art show named "Cereal Killers". The theme was breakfast cereal cartoon characters. I joined the show and decided to put my own spin on Toucan Sam, Tony the Tiger, and the Trix Rabbit. At the time I was inspired by a lot of flat shapes and patterns, so I applied that to the first two pieces. It was out of my comfort zone but it was really fun to explore a new style and I learned a lot from it. The Trix Rabbit was a fun concept, basically I thought what would happen if the rabbit finally got a hold of that cereal which he's been chasing since my childhood. It turns out he is allergic to ingredients in the cereal. Silly rabbit.

The "Simp City" art show took place in early 2016. I submitted three pieces and got to show with multiple artist in Santa Ana, CA. The theme was The Simpsons. The artist was free to take the characters and morph them in a creative way. I decided to pick B-characters like Krusty the Clown and RadioActive Man because they were more visually interesting to me, and of course to balance it out I chose Homer Simpson (the most iconic character).
My approach was to render them in a different style than the original cartoon. I really wanted to have fun with them so I added my graffiti style which is heavy on line widths. Coupled with a comic book texture and exaggerated facial expressions, I came up with a consistent look for all three. Each character had their own color palette which was important in keeping them distinct enough.

A collection of various illustrations that range from school projects to personal ones.
